Mimbres Turtle Hand-crafted in New Mexico, USA
This Mimbres turtle is handcrafted and handpainted by Mary Miller of Whispering Prairies Ceramics in Truth or Consequences, NM. The Native American Indians of the Mimbres Valley of southwestern New Mexico are known for their use of black drawings on a white background. Their striking style adds a distinct elegant look to any home decor. This turtle is 4.5" by 2.5" in size. Each one is custom made to your order; therefore there will be variations in the painting as each is individually hand-painted and signed by the artisan. It also comes with an artisan info card to add to the cache. Please allow 3 weeks from ordering to shipping, in case Ms. Miller is busy fulfilling prior orders.
Turtles are believed to bring good fortune by some indigenous Native American tribes and therefore make excellent wedding gifts, Mother's or Father's Day gifts or holiday gifts. In Truth or Consequences, we even have "Turtleback Mountain" overlooking the hot springs district which was used by the Native Americans and settlers to the area long before the community developed.
Miller is a ceramicist and is completely self-taught. "My work isn't done in traditional ways and techniques," said Miller. The artist strives to maintain her own individualism in creating her ceramics. This affords a "visual signature"- while viewing her work, one recognizes the artist even before seeing the signature. She owns the molds and hand-pours each piece, firing in her own kiln, and meticulously hand painting each ceramic piece individually so no two are exactly alike.
