Product Description

These genuine Native American made spiny oyster necklaces and earrings were hand-made by Aaron Calabaza and Victoria Lucero, who were born and raised at the Santo Domingo Pueblo near Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Both their parents are jewelry artisans, too.  In fact, both the Lucero and Calabaza families have been jewelers for generations.  The Pueblo Indians (as they call themselves) don't have a casino and this is one of the few ways they can continue to work from the reservation and make a living.  I have been marketing this couple's jewelry and paying them directly since 2006.

*  Triple strand necklace with the heishi beads that the Pueblo Indians are known for.

*  Purple spiny oyster earrings and necklace with stamped silver nickel

*  Earrings with Turquoise and Orange/Red Spiny Oyster

*  Red spiny oyster earrings and necklace

*  Purple spiny oyster and onyx necklace and earrings

*  Red spiny oyster and turquoise earrings

*  Red/rust color polished earrings

The spiny oyster, also called thorny oyster, is the common name for the spondylus, an ocean creature from the same superfamily as scallops.  The meat is edible and the shells are then sold for use in the jewelry trade.  They vary in colors but the purple is more rare than the red/orange species from the deep blue sea.  Here is a brief article about the mollusk:
